It will pay specific attention to the ethical dilemmas and dangers faced by humanitarian staff in their work. Virtual Illness Communities: Re-presenting Collective Experience
In this mini lecture, we will be exploring the construction of virtual “communities of illness” through the circulation of collective – sometimes competing – narratives. What are the possibilities and limitations of the digital medium as a mode of relating to another? Are some voices and narrative forms privileged? What does it mean for the narrative self to exist within a broader ecosystem? We will be unpacking these provocations through an analysis of Lizzy Rose’s ‘Sick, blue sea’.

Modern Languages & Cultures

  • MA in Languages, Literatures and Cultures
18 June 2024 12:00 hrs This mini-lecture will introduce students to trauma studies, a growing branch in the field of cultural studies. In the last decade, feminist, postcolonial and cultural trauma theory has shifted from the focus on a single, punctual originating shock experience as the origin of trauma (Caruth, Laub) to a more broadly conceived and context-specific notion of trauma that takes into consideration the lived experience of trauma and suffering in other historical and cultural (and non-Western) contexts. In this session, we will briefly explore the emergence of and the latest developments in trauma theory, with excerpts of Toni Morrison’s Beloved providing a compelling case study of how literature can provide a creative laboratory for the negotiation of trauma.
